JAKARTA , 1 April 2021– After a year of the pandemic, companies and workers are now starting to adapt to new work patterns. Companies are starting to adapt to manage the work environment to maintain business productivity so that it can run well because many workers have to work from home.
President Director Telkomtelstra Erik Meijer explained that the Covid-19 pandemic has an impact on businesses and the life of workers. In the past, workers were able to arrange between their personal and work life. But during the pandemic, physical activity in the office has shifted to a virtual work or digital workplace.
As a company engaged in Information Technology, Telkomtelstra also helped to encourage managing the work environment to stay productive during a pandemic through a webinar organized by the Telkomtelstra Youth Council with the theme Passionate Life and Excellent Career with Work-Life Integration.
“This event is organized by the Telkomtelstra Youth Council as an internal organization of Telkomtelstra which all members are millennials and are the voices of youth in Telkomtelstra. The Telkomtelstra Youth Council was formed more than one year ago, as a medium of discussion, as well as providing input to company leaders,” said Erik, Thursday (1/4).
He explained that the webinar was held due to anxiety of the millennial generation while working in the pandemic era. They think that working hase become less productive and lacks guidance from their managers, because it is not face to face but through technology. “This technology can be very helpful, but if it is not implemented properly it can also become an obstacle,” he explained.
In line with Erik, the Chancellor of Mahakarya Asia University, Ferro Ferizka Aryananda said that workers must utilize technology or transform digitally to integrate their personal life and work. Because digital transformation will support work to be more effective and efficient.
“We have been working at home for more than a year, we will return to the office, even though there is a vaccine, the conditions will not be the same, it will be in new normal conditions, some work at home some work in the office, so we have to transform into the digital era,” said Ferro.
However, he said, digital transformation without soul is just a tool. Therefore we must adopt technology in order to change old business processes to be efficient. Technology makes people more productive but it must be based on culture.
“In the past, people worked according to office hour but the pandemic changed everything. People used to work regularly, but during a pandemic they could have meeting at any time until forget the time, without a good culture it caused people to become stress,” he said.
According to him, we don’t need to follow other organizations or to be forced, but we need to explore our potential. The existence of technology is very helpful, but if it is forced, you must account for the readiness of the organization. “A lot of people refer to how Microsoft does things, but forget our own culture. We just need to recognize our potential and adjust technology to existing needs,” explained Ferro.
Meanwhile, Dhany Soepardi, Telstra’s Service Solution Architect explained that remote work arrangements before and during the pandemic were much different. If in the past we imagined working remotely on the beach, now we have to be in the room.
In addition, the absence of working hours means that workers do not have personal and family time. Loneliness also comes from the absence of physical or face-to-face interaction between workers.
“It is not easy to work in a pandemic era, you can do your job at any time. Suddenly there was an instant message coming in about work at night and it had to be done right away. Then I usually interact with office people but now I can’t,” explained Dhany.
From a human psychological side, Clinical Psychologist, Tara de Thouars explained that society, especially workers, cannot avoid mixing work time with personal life in the midst of a pandemic. So that it is required to carry out two roles simultaneously.
According to her, the worker’s brain is forced to take care of things simultaneously. Even though not everyone can adapt well. While a digital workplace is definitely beneficial, transitions can be difficult and finding a balance in life can be even more complicated.
Tara said, to deal with such a complicated life, it is not enough to divide your time because the rhythm of work has changed. The way is by managing a work environment from home to create a better work-life integration.
“It used to balance time and work. Now we integrate work and personal life together. It does not mean that accompanying children to study while doing work, children automatically feel ignored,” she said.
“The key is that we must be fully present and focused on whatever the task is being carried out, after that, we move on to other things. Because we cannot do multitasking work, so one of them will definitely not be optimal,” she concluded.
